Athar N. Malik, MD, PhD, is a neurosurgeon with the Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute.

Prior to joining Lifespan, Dr. Malik was the chief resident of the neurosurgery department at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, he pursued a medical degree at Harvard Medical School and a doctorate degree at Harvard University concurrently. Dr. Malik completed his residency in neurosurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Center for Brain Science at Harvard University.

Dr. Malik has a special interest in brain circuits, functional and restorative neurosurgery. He has conducted research with the support of funding from both the NIH/NINDS R25 Research Education Program Fellowship and the NREF and AANS/CNS Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care Research Fellowship. He has co-authored research and case studies for peer-reviewed journals and served as a guest presenter on his area of expertise in hospital and academic settings throughout the United States.
